Tinnitus

In other cases, the ringing sensation is caused by the natural loss of hearing due to aging, Meniere’s disease, head injuries, or even something as simple as wax build-up putting pressure on the inner ear. In rare instances, the ringing sensation can be caused by high blood pressure, which leads to what’s known as pulsatile tinnitus. In those cases, doctors can apply a number of methods to help alleviate the ringing sound. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be employed as a psychological technique. While this will not cure tinnitus, it helps people ignore the symptoms so they can get on with their lives. Other methods that can be employed in extreme cases include hearing aids and other sound generation techniques that are designed to overlap and cancel out the specific frequencies experienced. In most cases, those who suffer from the ringing eventually become accustomed to it and, after time, simply ignore it.

  • Lemon – Malassezia is a fungus and is associated with a number of dermatological disorders including dandruff.   • Camphor – Camphor is known to reduce dandruff which is attributed to the germicide, disinfectant, anti-microbial and insecticide properties of Camphor oil. Their mechanism of action has most often been attributed to the disturbance of microbial membranes, disrupting the proton motive force, electron flow, and active transport and resulting in the coagulation of intracellular contents. Anti-fungal effect of camphor extracts acts through inhibition of production of vital components of the cell membrane of the fungus. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane permeability, and inhibit the activity of the yeast. This, in turn, results in fewer young cells that are made in the skin, and thus prevents the creation of scales (dandruff).

Optimize Thyroid Function

There are several different ways that the thyroid gland can malfunction. The most prominent way is due to the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which accounts for approximately 90 percent of cases of clinical hypothyroidism in the US.

An autoimmune disease is one in which the body’s immune system has gone into overdrive and accidentally started attacking its own cells as a result of poor gut barrier health. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is the victim.

You can find out for certain if you have Hashimoto’s (as opposed to other kinds of thyroid malfunction) only through getting blood work done. A quick explanation of thyroid function is helpful for understanding this blood work

First, your thyroid gland works only after it receives a “green light” signal for production by the pituitary gland, which comes in the form of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). When TSH gets to the thyroid gland, the thyroid gland makes a molecule called T4. That’s not the end of it, though. T4 is not used by your body’s cells. T3 is. T4 is converted to T3 by the liver. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the body receives a TSH signal from the pituitary gland, but the thyroid gland struggles to produce T4. As a result, low T4 is the primary marker most doctors look for on a blood exam to signal Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. High TSH is also a potential indicator of Hashimoto’s, as TSH levels increase when the body tries to convince the weakened thyroid to make more T4. The final and most definitive test for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a test for the actual thyroid antibodies (TPO) themselves. When present in high quantities in the bloodstream, you know that your thyroid gland is being attacked.

The way to overcome Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is to heal the gut as well as possible. Do so using the recommendations made earlier: avoiding gut irritants such as grains, dairy, and even legumes, focusing on vitamin-rich foods like vegetables, organ meats, and egg yolks, consuming fermented foods or probiotic supplements on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, with Hashimoto’s, some or much of the thyroid gland is irreparably destroyed. If that is the case, you will likely need to go on some form of thyroid hormone supplementation to achieve optimal health.

While Hashimoto’s may be the most common form of hypothyroidism, it is not the only one. The other primary form of hypothyroidism that affects women is simple thyroid sluggishness. Many women struggle from this regardless of whether their blood thyroid hormone levels are clinically “low” or not. It is entirely possible to suffer from this problem and not test “officially low,” but close to it.

Regardless of whether you test “super low,” “low,” or simply “moderate,” nearly all women can benefit from optimizing thyroid function.

Thyroid production slows down in response to stress. This is what I have called thyroid “sluggishness” (and no, this is definitely not a medical term). This includes both physical and psychological kinds of stress. Physical stressors include undereating, a low-carbohydrate diet, excessive weight loss, over-exercise, or an inflammatory diet. Psychological stressors are all the usual pressures that come from adult life. In response to both types of stress, thyroid production shuts down in two primary ways. First, signals from the HPAT axis say, “Stop!” This “stop!” signal shows up on blood tests as lowered TSH production. With low TSH comes a lower T4 level, and often a lower T3 level as well.

The second way that stress impairs thyroid function is to throw a wrench in the link between T4 and T3 production. Stress causes the body to produce something called Reverse T3, which actually blocks T3 from working in your body. Therefore, a blood test that indicates this kind of hypothyroidism will show lower T3, elevated RT3, and possibly T4 and TSH on the low end as well.

The way to overcome “sluggishness” is to reduce stress, sleep more, eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full, and perhaps, most importantly, make sure you eat plenty of carbohydrates. The liver needs carbohydrate in order to convert T4 to T3. Be sure to eat at least 100 grams of dense carbohydrate every day (approximately four servings of fruit or starch) on a low-fat diet, and at least 25-50 grams (1-2 servings of fruit or starch) on a low-carb diet.

Palms are turned down as the patient inhales and raises their pelvis off the floor. They lower on the exhale. This is a great exercise for strengthening the lower back and hips.

Stay Connected

It’s important to stay connected with the surgery doctor even long after the procedure and recovery. They will keep a close watch on the patient and check their back to be sure that everything is working as is expected. A very small percentage of people will need to have surgery again. The number is far less for minimally invasive spine surgery than it is for traditional options.

The more I read and research health and wellness, skin conditions and their probable causes, the clearer the link has become in my mind. In the olden days our cleaning products were made of hot water and soap, or bicarb and vinegar, or just plain old elbow grease. Our bathroom cupboard was not full of hundreds of different products housed in plastic bottles and tubs, and our clothes were washed in nothing more than boiling water.

Diabetes is of three main types:

Neuropathy refers to a condition in which there is damage or disease affecting the nerves. Nerves control both movement and sensation, so depending on the type of nerve affected (motor, sensory, or mixed), there can a number of varied signs and symptoms such as weakness, numbness, tingling sensation, etc.

It can affect a single nerve or many nerves simultaneously and it can be a chronic or acute condition.

It may seem far-fetched that diabetes can affect nerves but this is one of the most common and most debilitating complications of diabetes.

It is theorized that diabetes causes damage to nerves by altering the function of the small blood vessels that supply the nerves. The excessively high levels of glucose in the blood are thought to cause damage to the covering of the nerves. This covering called the myelin sheath helps in the conduction of impulses along the nerve cell and from one nerve cell to another.

Damage to the myelin sheath results in reduced or slowed conduction of impulses in the nerves which gives rise to the various symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.

It can affect any nerves: motor, sensory, or mixed. Usually, diabetic neuropathy first starts in the feet and then progresses to other regions of the body.

Signs And Symptoms Of Diabetic Neuropathy

Signs and symptoms depend on the particular nerves that are affected, their location, and their functions.

Common symptoms are:

— Numbness, especially in the extremities (hands and feet)

— Tingling sensations

— Burning or freezing sensations

— Shooting pain

— Loss of muscle mass and tone in the small muscles of the hands and feet

— Imbalance

— Random muscle contractions

— Dizziness

— Increased sweating

— Urinary problems

— Sexual dysfunction

How Is Diabetic Neuropathy Diagnosed?

It is diagnosed by a doctor based on physical examination, patient reporting of symptoms, and physiological tests such as a nerve conduction test.

Nerve conduction tests are a type of neurophysiological testing that involves passing small amounts of current through major peripheral nerves to access their function.

Common Visual Defects

When one looks at a distant object, a near one in the same line of vision is indistinct. Now, if one focuses upon the nearer object, the distant one is not seen so well. This is because a clear image is obtained only of the object which is brought to focus upon the most sensitive portion of the retina. The other become indistinct as it goes out of focus. This shifting of focus is accomplished by a change in the thickness of the lens. In a normal eye the rays of light from a distant object come to focus upon the retina when the eye is at rest, that is, when the ciliary’s muscles are inactive and the lens is thin.

Farsightedness of Children

In this condition, called “hyperopia,” the eyeball is shorter than normal. This is a universal condition at birth but should disappear before there is much use of the eyes for near vision. If it persists, the rays of light with the eye at rest come to focus not on the retina but behind it.

Blurring of vision results

This is unsatisfactory, so the ciliary’s muscles correct the difficulty by contracting and making the lens thicker, thereby bringing the point of focus forward until it is on the retina. This gives clear vision but requires excessive work on the part of these muscles. For short periods of time this gives rise to no difficulties but if it continues muscular fatigue is inevitable. This in turn causes headache, pain in the eyes, nervousness, and general fatigue. This type of visual defect is the one which causes the most severe symptoms of eyestrain.

Important though farsightedness is as a cause of eyestrain, it is rarely discovered by the ordinary vision test, because during the test clear vision is secured by excessive use of the ciliary’s muscles. Hence, if a child brings a report from school that his vision test shows 20/20 in each eye this should not be accepted as conclusive evidence that the eyes are normal. If symptoms of eyestrain are present, a further examination is indicated.

The Use of Drops for Eye Examinations

There has been much misunderstanding and misinformation concerning the use of “Drops” for the examination of the eyes. The drops contain a drug, such as atropine or homatropine, which temporarily paralyzes the ciliary’s muscles. Unless this is done, the activity of these muscles in persons under about forty years of age makes the accurate measurement of certain visual defects impossible. Everyone who needs glasses should have a thorough eye examination, and for a young person this implies the use of drops.
