In other cases, the ringing sensation is caused by the natural loss of hearing due to aging, Meniere’s disease, head injuries, or even something as simple as wax build-up putting pressure on the inner ear. In rare instances, the ringing sensation can be caused by high blood pressure, which leads to what’s known as pulsatile tinnitus. In that case, the ringing manifests not as a constant hum but beats in time with an individual pulse.

Because it is a symptom of a number of possible conditions, there is no “cure” for tinnitus. Addressing the underlying cause may help, but, in the case of noise or age-induced hearing loss, there is little that can be done. For the vast majority of people afflicted, tinnitus is merely a mild annoyance that can even go unnoticed most of the time. If the ringing is perceived at a very low volume, the noise of everyday life will likely drown it out. In that case, the symptom will be most pronounced when trying to sleep. If it is low enough, ambient sound can help push out the ringing sound without depriving the afflicted of sleep.

In severe or “catastrophic” cases, the ringing can be so severe as to go beyond mere annoyance and interfere with an individual’s social and professional life. In those cases, doctors can apply a number of methods to help alleviate the ringing sound. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be employed as a psychological technique. While this will not cure tinnitus, it helps people ignore the symptoms so they can get on with their lives. Other methods that can be employed in extreme cases include hearing aids and other sound generation techniques that are designed to overlap and cancel out the specific frequencies experienced. In most cases, those who suffer from the ringing eventually become accustomed to it and, after time, simply ignore it.

Get Rid of Dandruff at Home

  • Lemon – Malassezia is a fungus and is associated with a number of dermatological disorders including dandruff. Lemon contains various flavonoids, which are known for their antibacterial activity and thus help in controlling dandruff by acting against these species. Lemon also helps balance pH levels and reduces excessive oils that can be a factor in dandruff. A mild lemon juice rinse effectively cleans away leftover soap or chemicals that can cause itching and flaking. Additionally, using lemon on dandruff problems provides an antibacterial action.
  • Egg whites – Antimicrobial (against fungus and bacteria’s) properties of the proteins present in egg white helps in the treatment of dandruff at home. Although, most of the proteins present antimicrobial activity, lysozyme is one of the most important enzyme present in egg white. It initiates events of cell death (among bacteria and fungi) by breaking their cell wall and thus exposing the weak cell membrane to the environment causing reduced in the dandruff causing fungi.
  • Camphor – Camphor is known to reduce dandruff which is attributed to the germicide, disinfectant, anti-microbial and insecticide properties of Camphor oil. Their mechanism of action has most often been attributed to the disturbance of microbial membranes, disrupting the proton motive force, electron flow, and active transport and resulting in the coagulation of intracellular contents. Anti-fungal effect of camphor extracts acts through inhibition of production of vital components of the cell membrane of the fungus. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane permeability, and inhibit the activity of the yeast. This, in turn, results in fewer young cells that are made in the skin, and thus prevents the creation of scales (dandruff).

Optimize Thyroid Function

There are several different ways that the thyroid gland can malfunction. The most prominent way is due to the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which accounts for approximately 90 percent of cases of clinical hypothyroidism in the US.

An autoimmune disease is one in which the body’s immune system has gone into overdrive and accidentally started attacking its own cells as a result of poor gut barrier health. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is the victim.

You can find out for certain if you have Hashimoto’s (as opposed to other kinds of thyroid malfunction) only through getting blood work done. A quick explanation of thyroid function is helpful for understanding this blood work

First, your thyroid gland works only after it receives a “green light” signal for production by the pituitary gland, which comes in the form of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). When TSH gets to the thyroid gland, the thyroid gland makes a molecule called T4. That’s not the end of it, though. T4 is not used by your body’s cells. T3 is. T4 is converted to T3 by the liver. T3 then goes on to be active in the body. It is responsible for delivering energy to all of your cells.

In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the body receives a TSH signal from the pituitary gland, but the thyroid gland struggles to produce T4. As a result, low T4 is the primary marker most doctors look for on a blood exam to signal Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. High TSH is also a potential indicator of Hashimoto’s, as TSH levels increase when the body tries to convince the weakened thyroid to make more T4. The final and most definitive test for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a test for the actual thyroid antibodies (TPO) themselves. When present in high quantities in the bloodstream, you know that your thyroid gland is being attacked.

The way to overcome Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is to heal the gut as well as possible. Do so using the recommendations made earlier: avoiding gut irritants such as grains, dairy, and even legumes, focusing on vitamin-rich foods like vegetables, organ meats, and egg yolks, consuming fermented foods or probiotic supplements on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, with Hashimoto’s, some or much of the thyroid gland is irreparably destroyed. If that is the case, you will likely need to go on some form of thyroid hormone supplementation to achieve optimal health.

While Hashimoto’s may be the most common form of hypothyroidism, it is not the only one. The other primary form of hypothyroidism that affects women is simple thyroid sluggishness. Many women struggle from this regardless of whether their blood thyroid hormone levels are clinically “low” or not. It is entirely possible to suffer from this problem and not test “officially low,” but close to it.

Regardless of whether you test “super low,” “low,” or simply “moderate,” nearly all women can benefit from optimizing thyroid function.

Thyroid production slows down in response to stress. This is what I have called thyroid “sluggishness” (and no, this is definitely not a medical term). This includes both physical and psychological kinds of stress. Physical stressors include undereating, a low-carbohydrate diet, excessive weight loss, over-exercise, or an inflammatory diet. Psychological stressors are all the usual pressures that come from adult life. In response to both types of stress, thyroid production shuts down in two primary ways. First, signals from the HPAT axis say, “Stop!” This “stop!” signal shows up on blood tests as lowered TSH production. With low TSH comes a lower T4 level, and often a lower T3 level as well.

The second way that stress impairs thyroid function is to throw a wrench in the link between T4 and T3 production. Stress causes the body to produce something called Reverse T3, which actually blocks T3 from working in your body. Therefore, a blood test that indicates this kind of hypothyroidism will show lower T3, elevated RT3, and possibly T4 and TSH on the low end as well.

The way to overcome “sluggishness” is to reduce stress, sleep more, eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full, and perhaps, most importantly, make sure you eat plenty of carbohydrates. The liver needs carbohydrate in order to convert T4 to T3. Be sure to eat at least 100 grams of dense carbohydrate every day (approximately four servings of fruit or starch) on a low-fat diet, and at least 25-50 grams (1-2 servings of fruit or starch) on a low-carb diet.

Laser Back Surgery

Exerciseto aid recovery

Speaking of exercise, there are many to encourage recovery. Physical Therapy experts have developed stretches and exercises just for those who have received laser spine surgery. These exercises will make sure successful recovery. While recovering, routine checkups will be mandatory to make sure everything is going well and the back is healing the right way. If any of the stretches or exercises are painful or even uncomfortable they can recommend different ones.

Sometimes, the doctor may want the patient to seek physical therapy. Being supervised will ensure that they are being executed the correct way. The exercises will be altered as the patient recovers. Here are some samples of the various levels of exercise and things that will be done at home to feel better, faster.

Common Exercise Levels

The first group of exercises are for patients who have been out of surgery for a couple weeks. The shoulder press is a common exercise to help strengthen the upper back and aid in posture. It can be done at home by lying on the back with knees bent. Legs are about hip width apart and arms on both sides with palms facing up. The patient inhales slowly, and as they exhale they press their shoulders into the floor without arching the back at all.

The second level of exercises involves more advanced moves. They’ll usually be prescribed after doing the first level for a couple weeks. Bridges are a common exercise recommended by spinal surgery doctors and physical therapists. They are completed by lying on the floor on one’s back. Palms are turned down as the patient inhales and raises their pelvis off the floor. They lower on the exhale. This is a great exercise for strengthening the lower back and hips.

Stay Connected

It’s important to stay connected with the surgery doctor even long after the procedure and recovery. They will keep a close watch on the patient and check their back to be sure that everything is working as is expected. A very small percentage of people will need to have surgery again. The number is far less for minimally invasive spine surgery than it is for traditional options.

There are many other benefits, too. These included a lower risk of infection, faster recovery, and the ability to return to work and other beloved activities much sooner. Because of the benefits and the growth in popularity since MIS’ inception, it continues to grow and be the top choice for those who must undergo surgery to correct sciatica, slipped disk and other back issues. Just be sure to do research on the doctors and facilities performing the procedure to ensure that they are very successful before signing up for the surgery.

Skin Rashes

The more I read and research health and wellness, skin conditions and their probable causes, the clearer the link has become in my mind. In the olden days our cleaning products were made of hot water and soap, or bicarb and vinegar, or just plain old elbow grease. Our bathroom cupboard was not full of hundreds of different products housed in plastic bottles and tubs, and our clothes were washed in nothing more than boiling water.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Now for most of us, our morning routine alone means we start each day by applying multiple products to our hair and skin. We vigorously and vigilantly scour our homes with a selection of chemical based cleaning products, and we use highly developed detergents, fabric softeners and ironing aids on our clothes each time they go in the wash.

So what’s the difference? Chemicals. Synthetic chemicals, poisons, pesticides, insecticides, preservatives, petrochemicals, toxins, carcinogens, allergens, and irritants.

The products we use in our modern day homes to keep them clean, and the personal care products we use on our bodies to keep them clean, soft, beautiful, moisturised and shiny all contain a different mix of chemicals, many of which are proven allergens and skin and eye irritants.

Our morning routine alone can unknowingly expose our skin to up to 100 different chemicals. These synthetic chemicals (ingredients in the products) are applied to our skin, or come into contact with our skin, where some of them may produce a direct reaction – skin inflammation and/or irritation, dermatitis, eczema and other skin rashes.

The skin is the largest organ in the body, and is extremely good at absorbing the substances it comes into contact with. So not only are these foreign substances in direct contact with your skin, they are also rapidly absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream where they have the potential to cause more kinds of havoc. Some accumulate over time, some are stored in fatty tissue or in organs, like the liver.

One of the biggest contributors by far to the symptoms of dermatitis and eczema are detergents, and in particular laundry detergent. When you wash your clothes, the fabric of your clothing absorbs the detergent and even after a good rinse, residue will remain in the fibres. You can detect the product residue easily by its fragrance just by giving your freshly washed clothes the sniff test. Your clothes are then worn against your bare skin. All day long your clothes link your skin and these chemicals and all night long your pyjamas, pillowcases and sheets take over the transfer.

The result is that your skin is constantly getting a dose of whatever ingredients and irritants or allergens are in your laundry detergent. Do you know what is in the detergent that you use?

These ingredients are also building up in your system. If you use off the shelf laundry detergents you clothes could be the main link between you and your skin condition.

There is a great international company out there that makes safety conscious, allergen free laundry detergent and a range of other household and personal care products that are safe to use, really work, and won’t make you break out in a rash. They have achieved this by removing over 3,000 ingredients proven to be, or suspected to be harmful to human health – so you don’t have to worry about what is going onto your skin on a daily basis. Break the link today!

Fundamentals Of Detox Planning

There are different detoxing plans that you can use. Some of them require you to use either supplements or herbs. Others require going without food of any kind and also eliminate supplements which is almost like fasting.

You can use a detox plan where you can make changes to the kinds of food you eat.

Some plans require you to add more water to your daily diet. Some people choose to use a colon cleanse as part of their detoxification plan. You can choose a detox plan that focuses on getting rid of heavy metals or one that targets only certain food or food groups.

There are also juicing detox plans as well as plans that allow people to eat, but eliminate certain foods from their diet. The kind of detox plan that you choose will depend on what the purpose is and what time period you want to follow it. Some people follow a detox for a few days and others for up to 31 days. Some people also change their diet to follow a detox lifestyle. That means that they incorporate certain foods in their diet that encourages detoxing on a daily basis.

There are plenty of different detox diets that you can choose from. One of the keys to follow a particular detox diet is to pay special attention to the colors of the rainbow. We all know that eating fruits and vegetables are essential for maintaining a healthy diet.

When you eat plenty fruits and vegetables, your body takes up a lot of antioxidants, trace and major minerals, vitamins and more. These foods will all help with detoxing your body. The ingredients in the foods are needed to allow for detoxification of the body. The reason that you must have plenty of different fruits and vegetables in the color of the rainbow is because your body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to help it detox, and each color offers something different.

You’ll want to consume foods from the rainbow with every meal. The colors that you’ll want to pay attention to are green, orange, yellow, red, blue and purple. Under the green color, you could have vegetables like cabbage, bell pepper or green beans. For fruit, you could have grapes, kiwi fruit or limes.

If you’re eating under the purple color, you could have grapes, or plums. The list of foods that you can have offers you plenty of freedom of choice. Another detox diet focuses on eating raw foods.

On this one, you can eat foods that are plant based and contains plenty of fruits and vegetables in meal planning. What eating a raw food detox diet does for you, is it helps eliminate toxins and also helps your organs not have to work so hard to get rid of the bad stuff.

Besides fruits and vegetables, you can have nuts and seeds and any grains that aren’t processed. Some raw food detox plans also allow for the use of powdered protein.

Your daily meal plan would need to consist of at least four vegetables and four fruits. You would also need to make sure you had at least four servings of legumes and four grains.

Your servings of nuts and seeds should be no more than three servings per day. Besides raw foods, there are spices and herbs that can be used as part of a detox plan.

Some of these that help with detox can also help give you energy while aiding with your digestive system. Some of these are ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and chili pepper.

When you want to give your liver a boost in ridding the body of toxins, you need to use turmeric. This spice is not only flavorful, but also very good for you. Basil is a herb that helps rid the body of toxins by keeping your digestive tract working right.

Though it’s a little hot to handle, especially if you’re not used to it, cayenne is a spice that helps the body eliminate toxins through the digestive tract. From the onion family, garlic is a huge help in getting rid of toxins.

It specifically aids your liver in the process and a big positive to this tasty treat is that it’s also an antibiotic. Cilantro is a herb that’s very popular in detox plans. It has the power to help your body detox the heavy stuff like metals.

It’s also an antioxidant. A popular detox plan to help the body rid itself of toxins is through exercise. While the body tries very hard to get rid of toxins, in today’s world, there’s just such an overload that it can bog down your system.

Exercising helps because it causes the process to speed up. When you get your heart pumping through exercise, you cause a greater increase in blood flow, which moves the toxins out of the body and through the organs until they reach the point in the body where they’re released.

This increase in circulation allows your organs to work a little easier. Your oxygen intake is higher, which also helps your body free itself of toxins. Plus, as you exercise, you can start to sweat and toxins are leached out of your body through your skin.

Also, when you exercise, you draw in breaths that force the toxins you’ve breathed in out of your body. Exercise helps you get rid of carbon dioxide that can build up in the body.

Aerobic exercise and yoga are two examples of exercise that can help your body get rid of toxins. Even if your health doesn’t allow you to perform vigorous exercise, you can still find a program, such as walking, that would help you with the detoxification process.

Supplements are instrumental in detox planning. Your organs can benefit from the use of these supplements. One supplement that’s frequently used to detoxify the liver is milk thistle.

This herbal supplement contains silybin, an ingredient that’s been found to heal liver damage caused by toxins. Not only can silybin aid in the repair of your liver, but it can also prevent your liver from absorbing the toxins that it works so hard to filter.

For your liver health, another supplement that you may want to consider using is garlic. The reason that garlic is so effective is because it contains sulfur. Your body absorbs this much needed mineral from the foods you eat.

It keeps your cells strong and healthy and protects your liver from holding onto poisons and toxins in your body. Vitamin C is a supplement that’s helpful with stomach detoxing.

Your stomach contains both good and bad bacteria. Toxins can make the bad bacteria grow even faster, which can then lead to ulcers. Ulcers are small holes in the lining of your stomach that can be painful and make it difficult to properly digest your food.

Vitamin C can be used to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your stomach. You might also want to consider black walnut extract. This supplement has many uses, but it’s especially effective for those suffering from Candida, a type of yeast infection.

While your body contains Candida naturally, environmental toxins and poor eating habits can cause an overgrowth of bacteria. When this happens, you may bloat easily, experience nausea, and vomit after eating.

Celery seed extract is another supplement that is used by those in the detox field to get rid of toxins because it acts as a diuretic. Dandelion root also has the same capability.

Poor Eyesight

Poor Diet: the lack of attention to eating a healthy diet is one of the main factors that play a role in the worsening of your eyesight. The American diet is deficient in foods that consist of omega 3- Fatty acids. The typical American diet is rich in saturated fat and consists mainly of simple carbohydrates such as white bread, macaroni and fast foods that are high in saturated fats.

Lack of Attention To Practicing Eye Relaxation Techniques: One of the main causes of poor eyesight is associated with excessive close up work on the computer whereby the eyes are not receiving the care that they need that is essential in relieving stress and tension in the visual system. Often, this is associated with the excessive use of technological devices such as smart phones, computers, tablets, ereaders and laptops. This problem that is associated with eye strain is something that is a major contributing factor to the worsening of your eyesight and can be relieved by taking regular periodic breaks from your close up work.

The Negative Effects of Blue Light from Digital Devices: digital devices such as smartphones and tablets and laptops emit blue light that can have a negative effect on the macular of the eyes which is the part of your visual system that controls central vision and also enables you to read fine print and recognize details in faces.

Lack of eye exercises: when we think about exercise we only focus on a certain type of physical activity that is associated with weightlifting, aerobics, jogging and running. While such regular fitness routines develop and build muscle that improves physical performance there is another type of exercise that improves visual performance.

However, did you know that your eyes also need exercise in order to function efficiently so that you can see near and distant objects clearly? The accumulation of strain resulting from excessive close up work over a prolonged period of time in our colleges and universities weakens our eye muscles that are responsible for helping us to focus on both near and distant objects. These eye muscles can be restrengthen by pursuing an effective eye exercise program to improve your vision naturally.

Major health factors such as heart health, diabetes and weight control are the main priorities in terms of the maintenance of our health care. However, in the process of paying attention to these health problems we should not neglect the care of our visual system due to the fact that everything that we do in this life depends on having healthy eyesight. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the various factors that are associated with poor eyesight that require attention so that we can improve the quality of our lives. These factors include poor diet, lack of relaxation techniques to relieve stress and tension in the visual system, lack of eye exercises and the negative effects associated with blue light emitted from digital devices. A comprehensive and effective program of eye exercises can enable us to achieve the goal that we need to accomplish for better natural vision.

Foot Self-Exam

A foot self-exam is really simple can be done by anyone within a few minutes. It involves one visually examining each foot, looking for abnormalities or unusual growths. The next step is touching and feeling of each foot.

When examining one’s feet, it is important to look over the whole foot, including in between each toe. Applying pressure to areas of the feet can also help you locate pain spots and feel lumps and abnormal bone growths.

For an easier self-examination one can use a handheld mirror and/or ask for assistance from a friend or family member.

A careful look at your feet can help you quickly identify physical oddities that can likely indicate something isn’t right with your foot or feet. Here are the most common things to look for when examining your feet:

Swelling. Swelling can indicate a number of things ranging from an infection, a fractured, sprained or broken bone, to issues with the nerves or lymph or blood flow and circulation. Notice if the swelling has increased and whether it affects one or both feet.

Redness. Redness is often associated with excessive pressure, poor circulation, a rash or an infection.

Blisters. Blisters are often the result of excessive irritation, friction, pressure and use. It is recommended that blisters not to be pricked unless by a foot care specialist as they can leave behind scars and lead to infections if improperly pricked and not cared for.

Cuts, scratches, or bleeding. Cuts can hurt and they can bleed seemingly uncontrollably. Cuts, scratches and bleeding indicate an injury to the skin surface. This can be the result of a fall where one’s foot is scratched or there is rubbing of the feet against the inside of the shoe.

If cuts and scratches aren’t treated, bleeding will continue and the risk of potential, dangerous infections will increase.

Bad-looking nails. Are your nails yellow, chipped, crooked, curving under into the nail bed? Can you see blood and bruising under the nail? Fungal infections not only make the nail look gross, but it can decrease the proper, protection power of the nail and lead to infections affecting other areas of the toe.

Diabetes And Neuropathy

Diabetes is of three main types:

— Type I: This is also known as juvenile diabetes and is a result of insufficient insulin production by the pancreas.

— Type II: Accounting for about 90% of all cases of diabetes, type II diabetes mellitus is defined by insulin resistance which means that insulin receptors on cells do not respond to insulin.

— Gestational Diabetes: This is seen in pregnant women who do not have a prior diagnosis of diabetes. It is theorized that gestational diabetes is caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Neuropathy refers to a condition in which there is damage or disease affecting the nerves. Nerves control both movement and sensation, so depending on the type of nerve affected (motor, sensory, or mixed), there can a number of varied signs and symptoms such as weakness, numbness, tingling sensation, etc.

It can affect a single nerve or many nerves simultaneously and it can be a chronic or acute condition.

It may seem far-fetched that diabetes can affect nerves but this is one of the most common and most debilitating complications of diabetes.

It is theorized that diabetes causes damage to nerves by altering the function of the small blood vessels that supply the nerves. The excessively high levels of glucose in the blood are thought to cause damage to the covering of the nerves. This covering called the myelin sheath helps in the conduction of impulses along the nerve cell and from one nerve cell to another.

Damage to the myelin sheath results in reduced or slowed conduction of impulses in the nerves which gives rise to the various symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.

It can affect any nerves: motor, sensory, or mixed. Usually, diabetic neuropathy first starts in the feet and then progresses to other regions of the body.

Signs And Symptoms Of Diabetic Neuropathy

Signs and symptoms depend on the particular nerves that are affected, their location, and their functions.

Common symptoms are:

— Numbness, especially in the extremities (hands and feet)

— Tingling sensations

— Burning or freezing sensations

— Shooting pain

— Loss of muscle mass and tone in the small muscles of the hands and feet

— Imbalance

— Random muscle contractions

— Dizziness

— Increased sweating

— Urinary problems

— Sexual dysfunction

How Is Diabetic Neuropathy Diagnosed?

It is diagnosed by a doctor based on physical examination, patient reporting of symptoms, and physiological tests such as a nerve conduction test.

Nerve conduction tests are a type of neurophysiological testing that involves passing small amounts of current through major peripheral nerves to access their function.

Treatment For Diabetic Neuropathy

The primary treatment is regaining and maintaining control of blood glucose levels. Treatment of diabetic neuropathy aims to prevent further nerve damage, restore as much nerve function as possible, and relive the signs and symptoms associated with this condition.

Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and taking the appropriate medications are vital to controlling diabetes and diabetic neuropathy.

You may also be given medications to help you cope with the pain of diabetic neuropathy, as well as medications to encourage nerve and myelin sheath repair.

It is important to be vigilant and proactive about foot care. Anyone with diabetes or diabetic neuropathy should routinely examine their feet for any wounds or injuries. Early detection and treatment of foot problems in people with diabetes can prevent life-altering and devastating consequences.

Common Visual Defects

When one looks at a distant object, a near one in the same line of vision is indistinct. Now, if one focuses upon the nearer object, the distant one is not seen so well. This is because a clear image is obtained only of the object which is brought to focus upon the most sensitive portion of the retina. The other become indistinct as it goes out of focus. This shifting of focus is accomplished by a change in the thickness of the lens. In a normal eye the rays of light from a distant object come to focus upon the retina when the eye is at rest, that is, when the ciliary’s muscles are inactive and the lens is thin.

Farsightedness of Children

In this condition, called “hyperopia,” the eyeball is shorter than normal. This is a universal condition at birth but should disappear before there is much use of the eyes for near vision. If it persists, the rays of light with the eye at rest come to focus not on the retina but behind it.

Blurring of vision results

This is unsatisfactory, so the ciliary’s muscles correct the difficulty by contracting and making the lens thicker, thereby bringing the point of focus forward until it is on the retina. This gives clear vision but requires excessive work on the part of these muscles. For short periods of time this gives rise to no difficulties but if it continues muscular fatigue is inevitable. This in turn causes headache, pain in the eyes, nervousness, and general fatigue. This type of visual defect is the one which causes the most severe symptoms of eyestrain.

Important though farsightedness is as a cause of eyestrain, it is rarely discovered by the ordinary vision test, because during the test clear vision is secured by excessive use of the ciliary’s muscles. Hence, if a child brings a report from school that his vision test shows 20/20 in each eye this should not be accepted as conclusive evidence that the eyes are normal. If symptoms of eyestrain are present, a further examination is indicated.

The Use of Drops for Eye Examinations

There has been much misunderstanding and misinformation concerning the use of “Drops” for the examination of the eyes. The drops contain a drug, such as atropine or homatropine, which temporarily paralyzes the ciliary’s muscles. Unless this is done, the activity of these muscles in persons under about forty years of age makes the accurate measurement of certain visual defects impossible. Everyone who needs glasses should have a thorough eye examination, and for a young person this implies the use of drops.
