About Winter Eye Problems

Tearing Eyes

Apart from winter weather drying out your eyes, the cold weather can also make your eyes over produce tears which can be very annoying and can make vision blurry. The best thing to help with this is to wear glasses, goggles, or sunglasses when outside to avoid the wind causing watery eyes. Also, if you are wiping your eyes to get rid of the tears make sure you use clean tissues or cloths to avoid infection. Excessive tearing eyes can also be caused by other factors such as infection, blocked tear duct, or surprisingly dry eyes, so if you are concerned make an appointment with your eye clinic or opticians so they can check it out.

Tired Eyes

The winter months are darker and natural light is less which can make certain tasks more difficult, reading and writing for example. Straining your eyes to see in lower light can cause eyestrain making your eyes feel tired quicker than usual. To help avoid this try having a lamp on when carrying out close work and

Test for Hearing Loss

Hearing loss should never be neglected and you should seek the consultation of an Audiologist, Otolaryngologist or Otologist if you feel the above mentioned symptoms.

A hearing loss is diagnosed based on the person’s history, behaviour and the results of medical and audiological examinations. You would then be examined to know of the causes of the hearing loss, and if it can be treated. The most common way by which one could suffer from a loss of hearing is with the fluid in the middle ear or wax in the ear canal not being taken care of.

There are a several things you can do to hear and cope better in situations that have caused you difficulty in communicating with the help of hearing aids and hearing problem treatments.

In case you are diagnosed with a hearing loss, you have to undergo a full hearing test. This test will recognize the degree and type of hearing loss you may have developed and also determine if you could be helped by hearing aids. The hearing health professional

Eye Exercises

Eye exercises can improve your eye’s ability to see fine print clearly. They are also credited with improving your eye’s ability to increase your vision to the degree that you can see fine print effortlessly without having to strain your eyes. This is due to the fact that these techniques improve the focusing ability of the eyes so that you can read text both close up and in the distance as well.

Eye exercises are also credited with improving near vision and distance vision skills. These visual skills are necessary in improving reading ability. Also these techniques can improve your eye’s ability to recognize things in the distance such as signs, read the menu at a restaurant both up close and in the distance as well. Additionally, these techniques are essential if you are a student and you need to read the writing on the blackboard.

Eye exercises are also techniques that help you to improve your ability to understand information due to the fact that one of the vision health benefits associated with this skill is improving mental focus and concentration. These techniques can result in an improvement of your writing skills as this skill

Lutein is a vision nutrient that is essential in improving the health of the eyes. Our eyes are exposed to so many negative elements that are harmful to eye health. Some of these include the harmful blue light and U.V rays of the sun, toxicity in our environment, and the negative effects that free radicals and the process of oxidation has on the eyes. Lutein is a vision vitamin that helps to correct these eye health issues. Lutein plays an important role in the cleansing of the eye lens; a positive health effect that reduces the risks for cataracts.

A double blind scientific research study, (the gold standard of research studies), revealed the fact that research participants that took 20 mg of Lutein a day or a placebo, experienced a significant increase in macular density pigmentation, glare sensitivity and contrast sensitivity,( the ability to distinguish dark objects in low light settings against their background). This is a particularly useful skill in driving due to the fact that you need to distinguish objects from their background in such low light settings in order to drive safely. It is very important to have a healthy level of macular pigmentation

Types of Glaucoma

The most common type of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma. It shows no signs or symptoms except vision loss over time. It’s important to get a periodic comprehensive eye exam so your eye specialist can monitor changes in your vision.

Symptoms of glaucoma are:

  • Eye pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Colored rings around lights
  • Blurred vision
  • Vision disturbances
  • Redness in eyes

Types of glaucoma

Broadly, the various different types of glaucoma are:

  • Primary- occurs due to angle closure and fluid pressure increase inside the eye
  • Secondary- occurs due to other eye conditions, disorders and diseases

Open angle and angle closure are the most common forms of glaucoma found in 70-90% people. Other glaucomas are less common and are found in few people around the world.

Primary Glaucomas

These are ideally the glaucomas which occur due to state of angle of anterior chamber of the eye. Usually fluid pressure in eye damages optic nerves, which leads to these glaucomas. The different types of primary glaucomas are:

Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

It is the most common type of glaucoma. It is an eye disorder in which optic nerve is damaged mostly because of increased fluid pressure inside

Eye exercises are important due to the fact that they can improve nearsightedness. This is due to the fact that these techniques are quite effective at releasing stress in the eyes and this is a vital key to improving your vision health. Eye exercises are also vital in reducing your risks for age related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

These techniques are linked with a reduction in the incidence of nearsightedness and they are used in the treatment of a variety of eye conditions such as pink eye, eye floaters and eye conditions related to head injuries and stroke.

Eye exercises are therefore a vital aspect of your treatment of vision conditions and vision disorders from a natural point of view. These techniques are responsible for better vision health and reduce your dependence on your glasses. The eyes have muscles and these muscles need to be exercised so that the visual system can become healthier and perform more efficiently.

These techniques can improve the focusing power of the eyes that help us to see distant objects clearly without glasses. Eye exercises are also techniques that are used to prevent vision disorders such

Eye Anatomy

The macula is the part of the human eye that is located at the back of the eyes at the center of the retina. The macula plays an essential role in vision function due to the fact that it is the part of the eye that is responsible for enabling us to see fine details clearly therefore it plays an important role in improving visual acuity. Due to the fact that it helps us to achieve sharp eyesight and enables us to see fine details it is a part of the eye essential in reading efficiency as it also helps us to see fine details and to read fine print clearly.

The macula is particularly essential in vision function due to the fact that it consists of a yellow spot. This yellow spot is that particular color for a reason. This is due to the fact that this part of the eyes consists of carotenoids. Caroteniods are described as the pigmentation that gives fruits and vegetables their green, blue, purple and yellow colors. Caroteniods also consists of the vision nutrients Lutein and zeaxanthin that are responsible for sharper eyesight and improve the density of the macula for

Hand Eye Coordination

Improves Writing Ability: Due to the fact that these visual skills are an important part of the process of learning these techniques are helpful in improving reading skills related to tracking. This is due to the fact that they help individuals to use their eyes to guide the movement of their hands in such an activity such as writing. This is due to the fact that this visual skill is needed in helping individuals use their eyes to guide and direct the words that they are writing from line to line on a page.

Improves Many Other Visual Skills: If an individual possesses poor hand eye coordination skills then such an individual can perform poorly academically. This is due to the fact that these techniques are needed in other skills such as proper balance and coordination and motor skills. These techniques also relate to motor responses associated with the connection between the brain and the eyes to send messages to the hands to grip a pen firmly to write properly. Additionally, these techniques apply to other skills that are related to sports performance as we use our eyes to guide our hands in athletic activities such as

Visual Acuity Eye Exercises

Eye exercises do strengthen the eye muscles and these eye muscles control the focusing power of your eyes for better vision without glasses. This is just one of the ways that eye exercises increase sharp eyesight. The practice of eye exercise techniques is also good in increasing the flow of blood circulation o the blood vessels of the eyes. This is a vision health benefit that also results in an increase in the uptake of nutrients and an increase in oxygen; factors that are responsible for better visual acuity.

Not only does an eye exercise program to improve your vision naturally include a manual with a series of natural vision improvement techniques designed to increase visual acuity but it also includes a helpful nutritional guide. This comes in the form of an effective dietary plan that shows you what foods to eat that end up increasing sharp eyesight and what foods to stay away from that don’t help you to achieve this goal. But it also shows you which vitamins and minerals that you need to take to achieve this vision improvement goal.

For example, there are certain foods in terms of green vegetables and fruits

Magnesium For Better Vision

Some general health benefits of taking Magnesium include lower blood pressure. This is due to the fact that magnesium plays a role in regulating normal heart function. From this point of view it assists the heart as a natural remedy for heart palpitations due to the fact that it maintains a normal heart rhythm. It also helps you to maintain normal blood pressure. Concentrations of magnesium are also found in the bones and skeletal muscle. Therefore, this mineral supports bone health. Magnesium is also useful in the sense that due to the fact that it is considered a muscle relaxant it is used by athletes to alleviate sore muscles. There is also an application that applies to relieving anxiety and depression. For instance, a deficiency in this mineral causes these symptoms as this mineral also regulates the healthy function of the nervous system. It is also important in regulating energy levels and improving the health of the immune system. But did you know that Magnesium also supports eye health? Here are some eye health benefits of magnesium for better vision:

Helps in Absorption of various vitamins: magnesium is involved in absorbing Vitamins A, C and B and

Corneal Transplants

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK)

This type of cornea transplant is a partial thickness transplant and replaces the front 99% of the cornea with a donor cornea. Unlike penetrating keratoplasty, DALK keeps the back layers of the cornea, the Descemet’s membrane and endothelium layer, in place and it is used as an alternative to PK, when these back layers of the cornea are healthy. The surgery itself is carried out much the same as PK, but just less donor cornea is used. Again, stiches are used to keep the donor tissue in place, but as only part of the cornea has been replaced, healing and visual recovery are usually quicker than what are seen with PK. To get the best vision following surgery, glasses or contact lenses may need to be worn.

Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK)

This type of cornea transplant is a partial thickness transplant and replaces only the back layers of the cornea. Unlike to above two transplants, EK can be further split into two methods; Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) and Descemet’s membrane endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK). Both DSEK and DMEK are very similar and the procedure to carry them out is the same,

Eye Injuries

The incidence of this type of superficial injury is higher among children who play in dusty environment and among factory workers like welders and grinders who are susceptible to injuries from metal particles.

Symptoms: Pain, sometimes a shooting pain, a blurring of vision, watering, redness; or the injury could be asymptomatic.

DO NOT rub the eye as this may force the foreign body in deeper. Do not scratch the eyelid or eyeball.

What to do: If the object is visible, lift it out carefully with corner of a moistened clean cloth or ear bud. If the object is visible, lift it out carefully with the corner of a moistened clean cloth or ear bud. If the object still remains, flush the eye with water. If it cannot be dislodged or seen, lightly cover the eye with a 2”x2” sterile gauze (preferably a sterile eye-pad available at the chemist) and seal it with a plaster or cellotape. Take the person to an ophthalmologist.

This is the result of an impact with a blunt object like a fist or stone, or a collision against a hard surface like a

Autologous Plasma Eye Drops

Other Dry Eye Therapies

Along with the above topical treatments, the use of other therapies can be used to help the symptoms for dry eye disease such as punctal plugs; which are inserted into the tear ducts to stop tears from draining away too fast, heated eye masks and eye lid massages; to help unblock the meibomian glands which can contribute to dry eye disease, moisture goggles; which help reduce tear evaporation, and taking oral nutritional supplements.

Autologous plasma eye drops may be indicated if the above treatments fail to control the eye symptoms and the cornea is continuing to be damaged. An ophthalmologist will assess the patient’s suitability for these eye drops before suggesting them.

What Are Autologous Plasma Eye Drops Made From?

Autologous plasma eye drops are made from the patient’s own blood. The patient will attend an appointment and will be assessed by a nurse to make sure they are healthy enough to give blood, if so then around 1 pint of blood is taken, this is done in the same way as giving a blood donation or similar to a blood test, but more is taken.

Skin Rashes

The more I read and research health and wellness, skin conditions and their probable causes, the clearer the link has become in my mind. In the olden days our cleaning products were made of hot water and soap, or bicarb and vinegar, or just plain old elbow grease. Our bathroom cupboard was not full of hundreds of different products housed in plastic bottles and tubs, and our clothes were washed in nothing more than boiling water.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Now for most of us, our morning routine alone means we start each day by applying multiple products to our hair and skin. We vigorously and vigilantly scour our homes with a selection of chemical based cleaning products, and we use highly developed detergents, fabric softeners and ironing aids on our clothes each time they go in the wash.

So what’s the difference? Chemicals. Synthetic chemicals, poisons, pesticides, insecticides, preservatives, petrochemicals, toxins, carcinogens, allergens, and irritants.

The products we use in our modern day homes to keep them clean, and the personal care products we use on our bodies to keep them clean, soft, beautiful, moisturised and shiny all contain a different mix

The truth is our world is full of irritants that we don’t know about. Most of us think we know what to avoid, but the truth is, most people don’t! By far, the largest group of irritants is right under your nose! It comes in the form of products we think are safe, and unknowingly apply to our skin and body every single day when we wash, moisturise and beautify our bodies and our homes.

Think about it… the skin is the largest organ of the body, with the ability to absorb anything it comes in contact with quickly through its surface. When you shower the products you use every day like soap, body washes and shampoos run down the entire surface of your body. When you moisturise you cover your skin from head to toe with lotions and creams. The outcome? A whole cocktail of ingredients enters your skin and your system.

The question is – do you actually know what is in your personal care products? Most people don’t. While they may look harmless, and there are no warnings on the bottle, is it is highly possible that they are causing the issue! Controversial

Symptoms of Hand Eczema

As its name suggests, the dry form eczema results in dry, fractured skin, with telltale little cracks on fingertips. Household work, such as cleaning or frequent water exposure, aggravates the symptoms and can prolong the healing process. Occupational factors may also attribute to the worsening of symptoms, as professions that require frequent hand washing (medical professionals, chefs, and barbers) are more prone to dry form eczema. Even the weather plays its part: a dry, cold winter makes skin feel dryer than during more humid parts of the year, resulting in further cracking of the skin surface.

Unfortunately, drinking lots of water will not sufficiently hydrate skin and is unlikely to improve hand dermatitis. The most effective way to deal with this chronic skin condition is to moisturize your skin. An ideal moisturizer for hand eczema performs three functions: it intensively moisturizes dry skin, it repairs damage of the skin barrier, and it reduces skin irritation and hand rashes. Historically steroid-containing creams (such as hydrocortisone cream) were recommended for dry form hand dermatitis, however it is important to note that the dry form of hand eczema does not itch, which negates most of the benefit of this approach.

Baby Atopic Dermatitis

Learning how to spot the symptoms of baby atopic dermatitis can help you act on it immediately. Atopic dermatitis in infants, which is also known as infantile eczema, can affect mostly the face and cheek of infants. It usually starts with itchiness and eventually with skin inflammation. If your baby is experiencing an infantile eczema, then he might be sensitive or allergy to a certain food he has just eaten or to the environment. It may also indicate that your baby will have certain allergies and sensitivities later on as he grows older.

Once your child experiences the first sign of infantile eczema, most probably he will be provoked to scratch his skin. Scratching can be dangerous as it may aggravate the infection. For your baby not to continue scratching his skin, you must dress him with a shirt that has hand flaps. You may also try to put mittens on your child especially during night time when you can’t be able to watch him over all the time.

For sure, your baby will cry as a sign of itchiness and discomfort. In order to lessen the feeling of itchiness as well as to keep your

Eczema Nightmare

FACING THE CHALLENGE – The uninvited guest is eczema; and it challenges you. It makes you angry, frustrated, and causes pain and shame. You feel like hiding and no one seems to truly understand what you are going through.

Yes, it is scary and messy because of all the creams, concoctions, itching and scratching. I have friends with eczema and I have seen their suffering. The challenge makes you feel powerless and close to despair and very disappointed.

FIGHTING BACK – But how do you do fight back?

  1. By refusing to accept the status quo; you must refuse to accommodate.
  2. Stand Your Ground and fight. These challenges make us uncomfortable, but you must stand your ground. Perhaps you are asking: Is there a natural healing for eczema? I must say that many people have found that healing quite easily.
  3. Keep searching; I have lost count of the times that an “expert” told me: “sorry, but you will have to learn to live with the disease.” A rebel as I am, I never accept an “incurable” statement; in many occasions I researched and researched and discovered that there was a cure, not only for

Psoriasis and What to Do

A lot can be done for psoriasis but the treatments have limits. The medical science, no matter how advanced, is not able to cure this condition. You might be angry at the doctor who no longer can provide help, or you feel annoyed by your friends, because they have no problems with their health. You may be afraid and uncertain about the future: Can I still do the things I want to do? Will others still find me beautiful? You may feel helpless: you are a victim of psoriasis, your body lets you down.

Some people will feel ashamed of their body and all these feelings are very normal. You rather would not like to have psoriasis, but you will be surprised how many people have the same as you. There will be moments that your psoriasis will flare and no matter how bad you feel, you will get up and realize one day that psoriasis belongs to your life now!

Slowly you will be going to look for ways to live with psoriasis. Maybe you will search the web to find an answer, or you start by looking for other people with psoriasis. Go to

Treat Eczema Naturally

Improve your diet.

Switch from a standard diet to a wholesome diet of fresh, organically grown fruits, vegetables, and nuts, mostly in their raw form. Foods such as salmon besides other fish can help, too (since they contain fatty omega acids).

Avoid items that could intensify your eczema. Everything from changing climate conditions to dish detergents and clothing fabrics can aggravate your eczema. In case you are susceptible to eczema, avoid wearing the itchy type of wool or any synthetic fabrics. These fabrics will undoubtedly irritate your dry, itchy skin much more so, resulting in the clothing to rub and scrap your skin. *Avoid creams that list perfume or alcohol in their ingredients. Perfumes are often alcohol based also it dries your skin further.

A great idea is an allergy test. Although having one done may also be difficult, or even a pain, you may see what foods, animals, carpets, or even trees cause your Eczema flare-ups.

In the event you can’t manage to come with an allergy test done, consider keeping a journal. Have a log of the things you eat, wear, and do over a particular day. For instance, note down that you simply

Effect of Loud Music on the Ears

The worst thing is tinnitus that generates constant ringing or noise in the nerves that is not related to anything in the environment. It is a malfunction of the hearing mechanism and the main cause is loud noise.

This can be from chain saws; music; drills; machinery; rock concerts; and so on. A friend of mine acquired it from being in the army and the guns he had to use. It is doubtful whether soldiers would be compensated for this condition when it occurs after they leave the service.

People who work with loud noise are risking their hearing and many do not know it. While it is common to have it playing in shops the assistants are unaware of the risk they are taking. Likewise, customers who have to put up with it while shopping are also in danger.

This is a general health hazard and one that governments and the medical profession should be advertising in order to prevent it causing a plague of deafness in the community. Yes! I did say deafness because my brother was in music and is driven crazy with the condition and is now deaf in one ear
